CASTELVACCHIO MUSEUM [ Dec 23 2009 by AO ]

When a professor of university was asked what is the most impressive architecture, his response was about Castelvacchio museum.
This is one of the museums I would really like to visit once.
The castle fort which was built in about the middle of 14th century alongside the snaky Adije river running calmly through the town has been rebuilt and reformed by Scarpa and he also has composed the exhibition there.
Flat composition is lucid and the front entrance has been placed at the eastern end of the volume of north wing of castle fort which extends toward both eastern and western directions and he has set up an axis line there along which sculptures are exhibited.
By placing a marble partition on floor in right angle against the axis, it provides a depth in a space. Also, a steel fixture is laid out at the already existing opening which expresses a typical layout of Scalpa.
Red stucco wall which comes out suddenly well fits nicely as an accent of space. Such characteristic materials as steel, marble, glass, stucco wall and those details showing the marks of hands has not been taken up as a main theme in the modern architecture.
The quintessence of space created by Scalpa which is said to be poetical would of course be existing in there.
