MIREI SHIGEMORI GARDEN ART MUSEUM [ May 12 2010 by AO ]

I visited former residence of Mirei Shigemori located closer to Yoshida Shrine in Kyoto. This used to be a home of Mirei Shigemori, a leading landscape architect representing Showa era and a researcher of history of gardens.
Originally, it was an old residence of a priest of Yoshida Shrine and this architecture built in latter half of 17 century is still now preserved.
The garden in front of the large Shoin (a study also functioning as a reception room) is the one which I remember as it was once used in commercial film.
The landscape which can be looked over from Tokonoma (an alcove) in the study beyond wide-opened doors looks like a beautifully completed picture. Also, the landscape looked over from Koukokuan (a hermitage) built at north-east corner of the garden is superb.
It skillfully provides a depth to the garden by utilizing a flat plane in shape of "L" within a limited space.
Floor of Koukokuan is arranged lower than that of the study, and designed to set it at same level of height as that of miniature hill.
So, the landscape from Koukokuan is set up for people to look up, and that arrangement works as an instrument to bring forth further depth.
Architecture and the garden are arranged as having uniformity so that they produce a place with harmonized unity.
This is a place where makes us feel an ideal correlation between the garden and architecture of Shoin.
