HIUNNKAKU (Takamatsu Castle)  [ Sep 22 by AO ]

The space deserving a special mention has an aura which is quickly felt as soon as approached closer.
Hiunnkaku Daisyoin (a large study room) at Takamatsu Castle is consisted of three rooms -a main room with a width of 4ken(approx 24 feet), next room and the third room, and these rooms are surrounded by tatami(matted)rooms each with a width of 1ken(approx 6 feet) and, also on further exterior, they are surrounded by an engawa (Japanese veranda)
These three rooms compose a huge Japanese room which amounts to as much as 90 mats in all, with only three of them.
Fusumas(Japanese paper covered door)separating each rooms are also very large and the appearance of three layers of square fusuma of 1 ken(6 feet) wide sitting one after the other gives a dignity to the space.
It is the roof truss of triangle that is composing this huge space.
Along with simple boarded ceiling and glazed windows, a roof truss exuding its presence even from exterior appearance produces a modern quality being much different from traditional Japanese architecture.
