FORMER KONPIRA OOSHIBAI (BIG PLAY)  [ Oct 20 by AO ]

The former Konpira Oosibai built up in the precinct of Konpira temple is a still actively working play house in which the theatrical space of Edo era has been handed down to the present time.
Its flat structure is very clear, with a row of ticket office, audience seats, box seats, stage and green room from the entrance to the rear.
These audience seats are arranged with box seats on the floor and gallery on both sides and also elevated walkways running from the stage to the rear of the play house on both sides.
Those stage properties such as cubic lattice functioning also as the stage, lanterns showing family crests hanging from the stage and red lanterns lined along with gallery, lighting fixtures like candles are creating a gay and joyful atmosphere.
Walkways, stage and audience seats are combined into one space, and so, we can easily imagine how pleasant it is when audience fills there.
No doubt, there is the stage just here in this space that we cannot feel in any other places.
I think that this is just an inevitable architectural requirement for creating the space.
